I am not sure I can ever remember a time when I didn’t have allergies. Since my childhood, I have had seasonal allergies. I find this name a bit of a misnomer because I pretty much suffer from allergies March-December. And, even then, put me in a room with fresh cut flowers, a dog or a lot of dust and the waterworks begins. Then, in my 20s I developed anaphylactic food allergies. I feel that allergies are sometimes trivialized by society. Considered a common ailment and dismissed as something that can be easily treated by over-the-counter medications. Unfortunately, that is … Continue reading
For those who are unaware… Eczema is a form of inflammation of the outer layer of skin (epidermis) or dermatitis. Common symptoms of eczema are: itching, swelling, dryness, redness, blistering, flaking, oozing and bleeding. My husband suffers from a severe case of eczema on his hands between the months of October and April. As soon as the cooler months pop up, his hands flare. It’s quite a painful skin condition if not treated properly. LaRoche-Posay Canada has introduced the 100 Family Program. The aim of the program is to assist in improving the quality of life of these Canadian children suffering … Continue reading
If there’s one thing my husband and I don’t agree on (ya right… 1 thing), it is with regards to feeding our two-year old son. Our disagreement stems from years of being raised on different spectrums of food ideologies. Growing up, my school lunches consisted of mostly either Nutella on bread or sour cream and olives / pickles on bread (I loved eating this!). For breakfast we could have our cereal of choice, full of sugar or not, and dinner always consisted of soup, chicken and a side dish. I never questioned this eating style and to be honest, I … Continue reading
I’m sure by now, we are all aware that October is Breast Cancer month. The sudden splash of pink stuff kind of gives it away. I don’t like pink. And I sure don’t like breast cancer. For me, breast cancer is a lot more important than one month a year where I buy a plethora of pink-coloured products to feel like I’m helping in some little way. For me, breast cancer is real. I was in my very early 20s when my birth mom, who I knew, was diagnosed with bilateral, aggressive breast cancer. (Bilateral means that it was in … Continue reading
I gave birth to my beautiful baby boy in February of 2011. It was a home birth. Such a beautiful and happy moment. I loved (and love) him more than he will ever know. The one person I failed to love after his birth was myself. I had a very rocky pregnancy with Cameron and prior to my pregnancy with Cameron, I lost another baby at 12 weeks. I’m very blessed in every essence of the word. There was just always that unhappy part of me. I carried some of the weight of the miscarriage on myself and continued to … Continue reading
