The Endorsement Parents Look For

Next week (May 6-12) marks the Canadian Mental Health Association’s 62nd year of recognizing Mental Health Week across Canada. What is Mental Health Week? Well, it’s an opportunity to raise awareness and reduce the stigma that surrounds mental health. This year’s focus is Youth Mental Health. A fitting theme indeed. With the recent focus on bullying, especially among our youth, we absolutely cannot ignore the mental health issues that are often at the root of the problem (for both the “bullies” and the victims). Mental illness in our youth is real and it is widespread. Here are some facts that … Continue reading

Yep, that’s my 2 1/2 year old drinking pop while on vacation   I am not a bad mom. I’m just a good mom who occasionally does “bad” things. I am, however, confident the good does outweigh the bad.   My daughter is spoiled. Rotten. On the other hand I take every opportunity that arises to try and help her understand that she is spoiled and there are many, many people in the world less fortunate than she is. We look at the picture of the little girl in India, almost exactly the same age as my daughter, that we … Continue reading

My daughter loves “treats”.  She has a sweet tooth and could eat things like Oreos by the bag full if I let her.  Of course I don’t but I also don’t think it’s unreasonable to let her have a sweet snack here and there.  She eats a pretty healthy diet overall so I know she’s getting what she needs.  The problem that I have with many of the store bought treats she likes is that I can’t even pronounce half of the ingredients in them and I’m not all that thrilled with some of the ones I can pronounce.  I … Continue reading

How many new moms to be have a vision of a picture perfect nursery, painted in a well thought out, adorable color scheme, a closet full of tiny, perfect little outfits and every convenience we are told that we absolutely must have to make life with baby easier?  From nursing pillows to butt creams, even if you do decide you need/want something you still have another hundred decisions to make to find the “right” one.  The baby clothing, furniture, accessory market has exploded in recent years.  And with the trend in first time parents being older (often translating into more … Continue reading

There are some things about motherhood (or fatherhood) that I had no understanding of until I had a kid on my own.  I never imagined that going to the bathroom by myself would be a luxury, that “me time” would be doing dishes while daddy does the parenting, and that I would look so forward to that!  Now being “part of the pack” I can typically spot another mom from a mile away.  Sometimes it’s a mom with year more of experience than I have and I marvel at how she is handling things.  Other times it’s a new mom … Continue reading

When our little one was about 18 months she was diagnosed with asthma.  Her main symptom is a chronic cough that tends to come on at night or nap time.  Having reflux and a mom with allergies increased her odds of developing asthma.  It’s been a long hard battle trying to get on top of this condition but, thankfully, things are finally going very well.  It’s been a combination of things  – medication and lifestyle changes, that have helped us manage her symptoms.  I thought it might be useful to share some of the things we have learned in our … Continue reading

Celebrating the True Meaning of Christmas I am not a particularly spiritual person. I don’t go to church every Sunday.  I don’t go to confession or even pray on a regular basis.  I was baptized in the Catholic Church and growing up I did go to church every week (although not the Catholic Church because there wasn’t one any where near us) and even taught Sunday School for several years.  I always loved going to church.  Even back then I’m not sure if I “believed” but I did know that the lessons I was being taught, and later taught to … Continue reading

Winters are long here in Saskatchewan.  Long, cold and full of ice and snow.  While city and highway crews are out sanding and salting our roads to keep us safe it’s up to home and business owners to keep their families and customers safe on their sidewalks and steps. There are various options out there for consumers to deal with their icy walkways.  Some are effective, some not so much and most have some serious drawbacks.  Salt, other ice melting agents and even ice scrapers can be destructive.  Several years a go my husband and I tore out our old … Continue reading
