The Endorsement Parents Look For

Author Archives: Laura (My Smart Hands)

The second sign in our My Smart Hands® alphabet song is Brown. Colors are great signs to teach your children. My son can recognize the signs for the colors but he still mixes them up when trying to identify them. Every time he forgets a color I simply show him the sign to remind him. It’s a great learning tool! Laura Berg My Smart Hands®, ‘educating young minds’

2.5 million people couldn’t be wrong! That is how many views our ASL ABC song has had! I wrote this song as a way for parents to help sing and sign their ABCs with their children. I found the traditional ABC song too fast and wanted to make sure there was enough of a pause to let children transition from one sign to the next. With this song you can sign the alphabet, the sign for the word or both!  See if you can learn your alphabet and all the signs in this song. My next several posts will have … Continue reading

Do you ever find your baby getting frustrated? My children would sometimes become frustrated if they could not do what they wanted to. They would become very aggravated and that frustration would take over their bodies at that moment and not allow them to do what they wanted to do. I loved the sign ‘frustrated’ because I was able to sign it to my children when I saw them start to become irritated and they would look at me and make the sign back in agreement. This seemed to help snap them out of their impending fit of rage over … Continue reading

This was one of my favorite signs to teach my children. It is a natural sign and very easy for your child to do. It simply looks like you are rocking a baby. Both of my children would hug themselves and rock from side to side. Babies love other babies, they are often fascinated by them and want to touch and hug them. If you have a doll in your house you can introduce the sign for baby to your little one. You can cradle the doll like a baby and rock it back and forth while saying ‘baby’. Then … Continue reading

I’ve had many requests this year for ASL Christmas signs so my children and I sat down and did a video with several Christmas themed signs. We hope you enjoy!!

Foods are great starter signs for babies. Babies are often very motivated to learn food signs, especially foods they love. It is also easy to teach food signs because normally during mealtimes you have your baby in a high chair; this allows for great face-to-face interaction. You have their undivided attention as you sit in front of them offering food. Take your time during meals. For example, if you are offering your baby apple sauce you can really take your time and teach the sign for APPLE. Make the sign APPLE and then offer your baby a spoon of apple … Continue reading

I am pleased to announce the launch of our new animated ASL dictionary for kids. This was motivated by my daughter’s interest in watching animated songs on You Tube. There were no animated ASL characters that would teach her signs so I figured I’d make some for her and my son. They have loved helping me with the ideas for the animated dictionary. I am posting each video on You Tube then I will compile them into a dictionary to put on my website. I hope you enjoy the new animated signing words that I am about to share! The … Continue reading

I absolutely love these cards! When my daughter started grade one I always wanted to write her a little note to put into her lunch to remind her I was thinking of her during the day. Then school started and the morning craziness began and I would always forget to include a note. I would try to do it the night before but I was often exhausted from the day’s activities that all I wanted to do was put my feet up.  Then I discovered LunchHugs and I was so exited! I was especially excited to see they had cards … Continue reading
