This year is S’s first year of school. She is a young JK student (just turned 4 in Dec) She is very excited for so many first experiences being at school has to offer. The biggest one right now is Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day for us grown up is about romance and love. For kids it is fun and goodies. Our school has many allergies so the kids can not bring in very many treats. Dairy and nut allergies make if somewhat difficult to figure out what to send anyway. We are sending in cards and each card has a heart shaped sucker.
I thought this was the prefect opportunity to have S practice writing her name. She can usually do it if we coach her along. We need to spell it out slowly for her as it is a long name. But practice makes perfect. Plus having her write her name on her cards herself gives her a sense of pride. She does get board easily and I am finding she is only able to do 4 or 5 at a time. So we are getting started today since it is a snow day here.
First we did a practice sheet
Once she had her name down we started on the Valentine’s Day cards. Like I mentioned above she only had the patience to do a few at a time. Her words exactly were “This is exhausting!” LOL So to keep it fun we will take a break.
A few done lots to go!
I am going to have to keep one for my keepsake box. It is always fun to look back and see how the kids use to write their names. It was great to have this chance to have her practice writing her name in a different setting. I think she enjoyed it. I am noticing an improvement daily with her printing.
Are there occasions or everyday opportunities you turn into learning opportunities with your children?

So sweet! What a great idea
I think every activity (pretty much) can be a learning opportunity! Love what you did here!
P.S. “This is exhausting!” LOL Too funny!!! Sounds like my 4 year old!
What a perfect idea to motivate her to practice! Those cards are adorable.
I made my son sign his name every year too! He didn’t really want to, but it is great practice and makes its personal.
What a creative idea! Thanks!
Cute!! I love the idea to keep one in your keepsake box!
Great post! I’ve been working with my boys! They get very bored very quickly lol! I thinking they are catching on that I’m trying to teach them!! lol
What a great idea. I picked up SO many ten cent boxes of valentines last year that I think we’ll use up a few to practise name writing.
So cute!! I love this stage when they’re learning to master writing their name!
It’s monkey’s first valentines as he missed it last year due to being sick, so in grade one they are having a party and he is super excited to get valentines for his friends. Love her printing, too cute!
You’re daughter did a nice job of the Valentines! One everyday opportunity that I turn into learning for my kids is cooking, as they seem to respond well to instruction. In fact, my 7-year old often makes a meal for the whole family on his own initiative!
