It’s always interesting as a pet owner to hear how other people choose their family pet(s). I know many people who do a lot research online, visit breeders or pet shelters and consult with veterinarians or vet technicians to narrow down their choices.
I did none of the above and people always laugh when I tell them how I became a dog owner.
Here’s my story…
Starting in 1987, on the weekends after piano or swimming lessons, I would watch TV. Not just any TV show – WWF.
Yes. As in World Wrestling Federation.
It was love at first sight when I first saw Matilda on TV. The drool, the wrinkles, the slightly grouchy and aloof expression on her face — I fell in love with English Bulldogs and Davey Boy Smith (aka The British Bulldog) became one of my favourite wrestlers.
I wanted a bulldog just like Matilda. OK, I also wanted braids in my hair like Davey Boy Smith too.
I begged my parents until I was 18 to add a dog to our family but it never happened.
When my husband and I became homeowners, instead of buying ourselves a new sofa we bought….. you guessed it – a dog.
On a whim, we brought home a wrinkly 12 week old bulldog and slept beside her on the floor for weeks so she would get used to us.
I have been a proud dog mom for 6 years.
Yes, she drools a lot.
Yes, she sheds a lot (we vacuum once or several times a week depending on the season – she sheds more in the Summer).
Yes, she snores like a bear and passes gas like it’s her hobby.
Our dog shares a birthday with our daughter (they are exactly 2 years apart) and I take this as a sign that she was meant to be part of our family.
So there you have it. I became a dog owner because of WWF.
How did you choose your family pet? I’d love to hear your story.

What a cool & unique story!
One day, after receiving my very first credit card in the mail, I was walking through the mall with my friend. We wandered into the pet store, and behind the glass was the CUTEST little dachshund chasing his tail. My friend suggested we pass some time by playing with him in the “puppy love” room. Let’s just say that the “Puppy Love” room and a brand new credit card are a bad combination
Hahah… that’s such a funny story Michelle. I’m sure you don’t regret it though – might have been one of the best purchases to date!
OMG I love this story! I always wanted a dog growing up. Even had a stuffed animal dog that I bought a leash for and walked around every day. As soon as we got our house we decided a dog was our first purchase as well. We hadn’t really started much research when we saw an ad in the paper for “wolfpups” not sure why we were so intrigued but we went for the drive to check them out.
There was a beautiful husky mom with her 7 pups most of which were wild and chewing on our laces, jeans etc. This one blue eyed beauty just stared up at me – I picked her up and she literally slept on my shoulder for 3 hours while my hubby analyzed every single dog. He finally looked over and said “clearly this dog has chosen you”. We took her home, named her Jessie and 12 years later she is still our fur baby!!!
