Natural Disasters at the Museum of Nature
On Tuesday, September 27th a gala was held at the Museum of Nature. It was an Ottawa elite event with dignitaries, sponsors of the museum and media. The evening began with mingling, wine, hors d’oeuvres and networking. The room was warm and welcoming. This was one of the first media events I have taken my DH. Usually the events I attend involve my kids or my girlfriends however he loves museums and everything scientific so this was a perfect first event for him.

A myriad of interesting speakers spoke about the creation of the exhibit, the sponsors attached to the project and the scientists involved in the research behind the displays. Each speaker was prefaced with some type of weather sound byte. As we were released into the exhibit snow began to fall from the ceiling and security guards directed us through the wind tunnel to the exhibit. Each of the exhibits was well displayed and contained hands on activities, videos, majestic pictures and actual artifacts from natural disasters around the world.
The most moving and visually stunning portion from the Natural Disasters exhibit was the section dedicated to Hurricane Katrina. As an educator I know the stories that student works of art can express with no words. I was brought to tears by the vivid and stark pictures created by the children affected by Katrina. Located above this display was the dingy used to save families from their roof tops in New Orleans . It towered several metes about the exhibit, in order to give the observer a better understanding as to how deep the actual water was during Hurricane Katrina. That concrete visual, as simplistic as it was, was the most powerful for me.

****Disclaimer  – I was honored to attend this event, it was educational, scientific and engaging. I was in no way paid or influenced to write this post. This is my own opinion as a parent and educator. Yes, I even paid for my own parking.

However, I did ask for a family four pack of Museum of Nature passes to give away to my one of my readers. The Museum of Nature is located in Ottawa, but this giveaway is for anyone. Just leave me a comment about what you are most looking forward to seeing at the Natural Disaster exhibit at the Museum of Nature. If you are on Twitter, use the hashtag #naturaldisasters and let me know you tweeted about the contest for an extra entry. Leave your email addy and I will contact the winner on Friday, October 12th. This exhibit closes in May of 2013.

Oh! That sounds like an interesting exhibit! Thanks for sharing! We love Ottawa’s Museum of Nature. My best friend lives around the corner from there and had her wedding there! It was a very ‘different’ and unique wedding experience! One we’ll never forget!

I was not aware of this museum and I am definitely very interested in attending. I am most interested in seeing tornado information since we had a tornado hit our small town in 1986 when I was in Grade 8 and I remember the disaster relief vividly since my Dad was the Deputy Reeve for the town.
Thanks very much for the chance to win tickets.
