All year we look forward to summer break where we can relax from the soccer mom role for a couple short months and spend quality time reconnecting with each other as a family. Our summer has been filled with our usual DIY projects, days at the pool and even a little camping break. Now that school break is just about half over, back to school prep is creeping it’s way back up my list of priorities.
I have never thought getting ready for the back to school routine was easy but having three school aged kids has taught me to be organized and start preparing early. School supplies and new school clothes can be expensive, especially when you have more than one child in school; the biggest way to alleviate strain on my wallet is to watch for sales and have my list ready to go when I see a decent savings. If I can get away with it, I prefer to shop for everything at once to avoid over buying or duplicates.
It’s not all about the long list of school supplies and new school clothes; a good portion of the prep is getting your kids back into their school day routines and bedtime rituals. When my kids were younger I could just tell them when the sun went down it was bedtime. That worked well in the winter but come summer, I had some explaining to do. Take it from me, be careful how you word things; it could come back to haunt you.
Some children are nervous about the new school year; the first year of school is a big change for both your little one and for you. I talked tough with the jumping up and down and party I threw each time one of my kids was starting big kid school. Cough. When it came down to it I was teary-eyed with a little ache in my heart each time I watched my kids disappear into the school for the first time. This year I had the proud mama moment of seeing my son graduate grade 8; it took everything I had not to bawl like a baby at his ceremony and completely embarrass the kid. He is eagerly awaiting the start of his high school experience this fall but my tune has changed; I’m not ready for my boy to grow up or experience the more adult-like things that come along with high school.
Preparing for back to school isn’t as easy as it sounds but with a little organization and budgeting you can manage to save yourself some time and money; those are the things you can control. Your feelings and your child’s nervousness take a little more care. Just as you prep your child mentally for the new school year and get them excited for the new experiences they will earn like badges, remember you are not alone; all moms go through the moments of not wanting to let go. It does get easier each year that passes but there are those moments that bring back the flood of feelings on occasion. Preparing yourself to expect this to affect you on an emotional level will help alleviate the intensity. By preparing yourself and your kids emotionally and mentally and organizing school supplies ahead of time, you will find a much smoother transition into the new school year and instead each milestone will be one to celebrate.

What a great post! This will only be my son’s second year of school and I’ve already learned so much just from the first year in regards to preparation LOL. Makes a big difference when you’re organized and prepared
Great tips! I just bought 7 pairs of jeans on-line (on sale) for back to school. I am like you I watch for sales & stock up as I go! With 4 kiddies it’s all I can do to keep everyone happy & set once school starts! Great post!
Such a great post – in this beautiful summer weather and easy going routine it is so hard to think about Back to School prep but you are so right, it has to be done.. My baby starts Grade 1 this September.I think I am still in denial….
Thanks Kathryn.
Awe, I remember when my kids started full-days; I was a mess. They grow up so fast; cherish the moments.
Thanks Brandi and Tammy.
Brandi, motherhood is a learn as you go deal. LOL Tammy, if it weren’t for being hugely organized and snagging those sales when they appear, my kids probably wouldn’t be as excited about the new school year. They all want new this or that; it adds up quick.
Great tips!
I used to love back to school year as a kid and my kid already dreads it. He so loves summer break.
I couldn’t believe that two weeks ago school supplies were already been advertised and put in the front of Walmart on display! So soon! Summer had just started!
I refuse to think about back to school yet, it’s too early!
However you make a good point about how kids tell it’s their bedtime. I have to explain over and over again that even though it’s not dark, it’s still their bed time LOL.
Fabulous post, Stacey! Eeeek. My little one is starting JK this Fall! I think I’m in denial! LOL!
Thanks Brandy, Kathleen and Christine.
Brandy, I also loved going back to school; I was always excited to see friends again and get new school books. Everyone’s different I guess. So far my kids love going back to school; hopefully that continues through high school.
LOL Kathleen; I’m glad to hear I am not the only one who had a tough time with that explanation.
Christine, I can feel the tears welling already. Hugs mama, you will get through this.
It’s interesting that I felt much the same way at my sons grade 8 graduation as I did the first day of elementary. It’s all part of growing up; the mama’s just aren’t ready for it.
Back to school already!? I haven’t even gotten my head around off for summer.
First it’s Wednesday’s on Tuesday’s and now this, people are really messing with my schedule. Did I mention that my kids aren’t even in school yet. Yes, it’s THAT bad.
Thanks for the tips.

LOL Sarah! Trust me, once your kids are in school you will understand the need to start early, that or do the scramble dash for supplies that are sparse on the shelves.
I have done both; early prep works best for me.
