I can’t believe the time has come. We purchased a lot of land in May 2011. It felt like an eternity between the time we bought and our closing date. Now we’re less than a month away! It’s unreal. We’re down to the nitty gritty.
If you were to ask me how I’ll be spending the next few weeks. The answer would be… packing. I’m trying to do at least an hour a day, but it’s ending up to be more like 2 hours every 5 days. That’s the life when there’s children in the picture. Of course I’m going to choose to play with my children over filling up boxes.
My children have been handling everything up to the move itself quite well. We take the kids up to see the new build weekly. It’s nice to acquaint them with the new surroundings and get them hyped up. At the same time though, it’s backfiring. My preschooler just doesn’t understand why we can’t just live at the new house now.
If you have kids and are planning to move soon, here are a few fabulous tips to keep in mind:
- Tell your kids about the move as soon as possible. Much of the stress associated with moving relates to dealing with the unknown. Share the details, encourage their questions and listen to what they have to say.
- Involve your children in all aspects of your relocation. Try to bring them along with you on house hunting trips. If this isn’t possible, photograph or videotape the house, as well as the neighborhood and new school.
- Take your children to see the new location before you move and walk in the new neighborhood together.
- Encourage kids to help with packing. Allow them to perform small moving chores that are age appropriate. For example, let them pack a box or two of their toys, games, books, blankets and other personal belongings.
- Help your child pack a carton or daypack with most prized possessions to carry with them on moving day.
- Ask your kids to exchange addresses and telephone numbers with friends. A letter or phone call to or from an old friend can boost the spirits of a child in a strange, new community.
- If your children participated in activities like scouts, little league, school band or choir, enroll them in the same or similar activities in the new community as soon as possible.
- Spend time with your kids after the move to help them get acquainted with their new home, neighborhood and school. Children are far more likely to cope with a move if Mom and Dad are positive and enthusiastic about the relocation.
Have you ever moved with children? I’d love to hear any tips you might have!

Great tips! We haven’t moved with our child (and hope we don’t ever have to because we love our farm and our home), but as a child, I moved several times. I can count seven times that I remember moving. That’s a lot of adjusting, getting used to new friends and new environment, and doing it all over again. We did this because of my Dad’s job that made us relocate several times because of his promotions.
For me, the moves weren’t as hard as they were on my brother. I always made friends easily. I remember because we were really upset about having to be uprooted, my parents bought us bunny rabbits! We quickly made friends with the neighbours’ daughter. The rabbits brought us together and they were also companions to us.
I’m not saying to go out and get your kids a pet, but that’s what our parents did for us! LOL!
They also used some of the tips you gave above.
Looking forward to hearing more about your new adventure! Exciting times!
I loved reading about your experiences, Christine! It’s so heartwarming!
One thing we have discussed is welcoming a dog to our family. We’re dog people and have wanted one for well over a year. I know it would enlighten my children. So we’re planning over the next little while to look around and adopt the perfect little pup for our family.
Another thing that I’m sure will make the move easier is that we’re moving into a neighbourhood where we know a bunch of people and will live within close proximity of them. All have young children too.
Love ziplock bags — great to dump a drawer of beauty supplies into and then just remove and later put into the new house bathroom.
When we moved it was overseas and our items were shipped by boat. By the time the shipment arrived our kids were out of most of the toys and clothes we had shipped.
we purchased a blow up mattress that worked as a couch, a bed and at times a jumpy castle. This one had a blow up bed and the blow up mattress sat inside. For very young kids this mattress could be removed and it turned into a wonderful large blow up play area. We had cable set up on the day of the move — actually purchased T.V.s then too, having a T.V. helps.
Need towels, 3 dish towels, hand soap, basket of cleaners, and toilet paper … all ready to go when you arrive at the new house. Worth it to get in a cleaner to clean the new place. Hopefully better than the one we hired.
We put the kids into daycare as soon as we could so it gave us time to set up (buy almost everything) for the house. They were able to play and we were able to get the house going sooner.
This is where family & friends really come in handy.
Get HELP! Our last move I had 3 kids ages 2,4,6 – it was insane and impossible to get anything done.
Get someone who can come on moving day to take them to McD’s playland, or the playground or on an adventure so they aren’t underfoot.
Colour code your boxes so you can get them put in the right rooms right away! That helps a lot.
Good luck! Sounds exciting!
