The Endorsement Parents Look For

Monthly Archives: April 2012

My kids are far from spoiled, and I myself had a wonderful upbringing, but every once in a while I look at their lives and say to myself “In my next life, I want to come back as one of MY OWN kids”. It happened last week. We had cousins visiting from overseas and it was all kinds of crazy fun. After several late nights, I allowed them to sleep in and be late for school one morning. This is something I’ve never done before and certainly something my mother never allowed. If we wanted to stay up and party … Continue reading

I try my best to make healthy choices for my kids. That includes making them eat vegetables and fruit every day, making them sit at the table for meals, brush their teeth, and go to bed on time. Of course their favorite food is still jelly beans and ice cream, they are never tired at bedtime and I am the meanest mommy ‘EVER!’ because I make them eat asparagus . . .I have normal kids! To liven things up and the kids on my good side, sometimes I let them PLAY with their food! Continue reading

Parents find it shocking when I give the advice “don’t force your child to say  “I’m sorry” after an incident.    They think I am letting kids off the hook.   Not true!  Let me take a moment to clarify my reasons. First, to be clear, I want your children to have good manners and develop a true sense of empathy and compassion for others.  Yes,  I want them to take responsibility for their actions and to make amends when someone has been wronged.  All of those pursuits are important.   I am only suggesting a different means and method to arrive at … Continue reading

I’m awoken gently by butterfly kisses on my cheek. I remember, as I open my eyes and stretch that its Mothers Day. I see a trio of well-dressed clean teenagers stand at the foot of my bed grinning, each holding a beautifully wrapped parcel.  The dogs, freshly bathed, stand next to them, panting slightly, silk bows around their necks.  My husband moves forward, and before he reaches me, my youngest child darts in front of him and grabbing one of the extra pillows, plumps it and places it behind my back.  Once I’m sitting up, my man places a breakfast … Continue reading

I’ve always known I was adopted. When I was born, my birth mom was young. She had little family support and, despite opposition, decided to parent me. By the time I was 3, she realized that she couldn’t provide for me the way that I deserved, and at 4, I was adopted. Adoption was always an open discussion in our home, and my adoptive parents are absolutely amazing. I was incredibly blessed. There were only a few times of sorrow in my youth over the pain of not fully understanding how my birth mom could do that to me – just … Continue reading
