Showing your love on Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to involve sophisticated presents, hours spent crafting cards or even chocolates or flowers. Sure, those things are nice, but Valentine’s is really one of those holidays where the thought is what counts most. And hopefully that’s just a simple, “I love you.”

Here are ways to show your love in simple ways and let your family how much they mean to you on this special day!

Express your love to your child during their bedtime routine. Read a ‘sweet’ bedtime story together such as ‘Love You Forever’ by Robert Munsch.

Get the kids in their PJs and bundle up to watch a favourite Valentine’s movie. Try some of these kids’ favourites: Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown  – Winnie the Pooh, A Valentine for You – Mickey & Minnie’s Sweetheart Stories, Be My Valentine, Love, Barney and Alvin and the Chipmunks, A Chipmunk Valentine – all available on DVD.

Have your family send Valentine’s Day greetings through the mail rather than via email or text. The cards can be kept forever rather than disappear into cyberspace.

Consider choosing a unique gift for your children on Valentine’s Day. Try something educational like a new board game every year or maybe a new book? Make it a family date and play the game or read the book with your kids.

Make the entire month of February the month of secret notes or messages. Leave love notes or notes of how much you appreciate your family. Sneak them into lunches, tuck under a pillow or post on a mirror.

Spend dinner at home as a family and make a heart-shaped pizza. Check out your local pizza places for these special pizzas too.

Spend the time with your children creating Valentines for classmates, teachers, friends, and family members. Nothing brings a family together like a little glitter glue.

Make Valentine’s Day treats together. Spend the day baking and use heart-shaped cake pans or cooking cutters. Make heart-shaped pancakes or Rice Krispies treats.

Go sightseeing as a family for Valentine’s Day. Many attractions are hosting special family events for Valentine’s Day.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
