My household has a serious soda lover! Not only is it so NOT good for you, but it is also expensive and all those cans and bottles are not good for the environment.
At Christmas I decided to buy a Soda Stream Soda maker for my DH as a gift that would keep on giving. Sometimes when you buy these novelty type products they fade and get shoved in the back of your cupboard and forgotten about. Well I can happily say our soda maker sits proudly on our counter 7 months after being purchased – and it is not collecting dust!
Our Soda Stream gets used a number of times each week to make delicious, ASPARTAME FREE, sparkling water, soda and flavoured waters.
Positives:
- There are a variety of Soda Stream machines to choose from that will suit everyone’s kitchen decor.
- A wide variety of flavours to choose from that really do taste like their bottled/canned counterpart.
- Can order your SodaStream supplies online if you don’t have a retailer near you (Sears in Canada and selected WaterDepot stores carry these).
- Can customize the amount of bubbles and sweetness to your own taste.
- Everyone who has access to regular tap water can use this system.
- Saves you money in the long run!
- Environmentally friendly reusable bottles and refillable CO2 cartridges.
Negatives:
- The plastic bottles cannot be washed in the dishwasher and they only have a 3 year lifespan.
- My dog does not like the “buzzing” sound the machine makes – it is really funny to see her run out of the kitchen.
- Initial start up cost can be a bit high. The lowest priced kit starts at $99 and some models go up to $279.
If your family drinks a lot of soda water or pop I highly recommend picking up a system for yourself. You will be doing something good for yourself, your family and the environment.

WOW interesting, never heard of it? We aren’t be Soda lovers, but I know many people who would love this! Thanks
Thanks for this review, but I’m still not sold on the cost. This is a novel idea and I wish I believed that it were cost effective!
Assuming that you buy the $239.00 (mid-level) start-up kit, 1 extra carbonator ($18) and 8 soda syrups (enough for 1 serving per day for one year, $56.00), your total cost would be around $313. Cans cost only $0.25 each. A year’s supply would be only $91.25. You would need to be consuming at least 3 cans of soda each day to just to be breaking even.
That’s a lot of soda and sparkling water before you start saving money! In this case, I think the reduction of environmental waste has to be the draw.
Drink up, and enjoy your bubbles!

I went for the cheapest model as it was a hard thing to justify for me as well. 3 cans of soda a day in our house, is not a problem though. I personally use it mostly for the soda water, which is pretty pricy at the grocery store. We drink a lot of it. Environmental waste is definitely a driver as is the convenience of always having it on hand.
Interesting… I had never heard of this product!
We just got a Bed Bath and Beyond in our city, and they carry this line! I’m even more tempted to try it out now1
