Signing Time PTPA Summer Winner

From an extremely early age, my daughter has been trying desperately to speak her mind.  When we saw that at 9 months she was going to end up creating her own sign language if we didn’t step in, hubby and I decided it was time to break out the college American Sign Language textbooks and see what we could teach her.  It took a few tries of signing simple signs like “more” and “thank you” before she really got what the meaning was, but after that she would nod “yes” whenever we would ask her something with those simple signs.

It was at almost exactly one year, though, that she looked at us and just as plain as could be signed “more” right to us.  Of course, we cheered for about thirty minutes straight and then decided we needed to introduce even more signs to her.  A week or so later she signed “thank you” and then “all done” and from that time she has added almost 30 signs to her list of frequently used words, and is even stringing up to 3 signs together at a time.  Now, at 18 months, she signs, speaks and communicates better than I had ever hoped, and is a much happier toddler now that she can use words and signs instead of squeals and grunts to get her opinions known.

Unfortunately, I found that I have purged a good portion of the signs I learned in college, and the signs I do remember aren’t really anything a toddler can use in their day-to-day, so we have found ourselves searching online for new signs to teach her.  So, of course I was thrilled when I heard that on December 9th, Nick Jr. was going to be premiering a new music series called Signing Time to teach sign language to preschoolers.

ST_Rachel_Chalkboard-300x225 Signing Time PTPA Summer WinnerSince my daughter doesn’t watch a lot of television, I actually had no idea that Nick Jr. is a 24-hour commercial-free educational network for preschoolers, and had no idea how many great shows they have for young kids – at any hour.  But, my daughter does watch Yo Gabba Gabba on DVR so she can get her groove on, and just the other day we caught one of the Signing Time music videos on Nick Jr. and I watched as my daughter stopped in her tracks and sat glued to the screen during the video.

We were sent a screener for the Signing Time music videos and it had the same effect on all of us.  We all sat as a family and grooved to the original and insanely catchy tunes sung and signed by Rachel Coleman.  I was actually supposed to be writing a review at the time, and was sitting at my computer with my hands on the keyboard when hubby turned on the DVD, but found that Signing Time and my snuggling family was too hard to resist.  In a span of just 5 songs, I learned (or remembered, in some cases) a whole bunch of signs that not only were extremely practical to teach our daughter, but also were so fun that repeating them left us all laughing even after the video had stopped.

That very next day we all had three new signs that we added to our list of frequently used items, and couldn’t wait to watch the videos again to learn more.  The brilliance of the Signing Time videos is not just that it’s sign language, it’s that it is aimed at teaching really young kids sign in the most fun and easy way possible.  We all know that kids love songs with hand motions, so teaching them songs in sign language is really just the next step – and something that they can use as a skill forever.

In addition to some really cute and catchy tunes, Signing Time does have some really cool learning properties to help kids understand and emulate the signs they see on T.V.  For one, all of Rachel Coleman’s fingers have a colorful band just below the finger tips, which makes it easier to see and process the signs, even when they are done fast (which most of them are – they have to keep up with the beat!).  The music videos are also impossible to turn away from, which I think is in a large part due to the fact that you just don’t want to look away for fear you might miss something.  Pair that with the cute images and videos of kids signing to the music and you’ve got an irresistible combination for kiddos.

Signing Time can be seen on Nick Jr. T.V. as well as on www.nickjr.com

A bit of background from about Signing Time: Coleman co-created Signing Time as a means to teach children to communicate using American Sign Language (ASL).  As the mother of a daughter who is deaf, and another daughter with both cerebral palsy and spina bifida, sign language has played a central role in their family. Coleman has spent the last seven years making sign language fun and accessible for all children through the Signing Time series, which includes award-winning DVDs, music CDs, books, flashcards and a former public television show. Coleman, who is also a singer and songwriter, has written all the original songs featured in the series.  In 2008 Rachel was nominated for an Emmy in the category of Outstanding Performer in a Children’s Series.

After viewing the Signing Time screener, I am so excited to check out the PTPA Award Winning Signing Time Parent Success Kit and see what other ideas and tips they have for parents teaching young kids to sign.  I, for one, am planning on continuing to sign well into the preschool years and beyond and could use all the help I can get in giving our family new words and phrases to learn that help us describe and respond to all the different aspects of our lives.

To tummy tuck or not to tummy tuck

Amazing!

Amazing!

A few months ago, I was reading a mom blog online and there were photos of Kate Gosselin on the beach with her kids (for prying eyes who want to see the results of her surgery, I assume). The worst part? They were interspersed with ads for diet supplements! Why are we so hard on ourselves? It’s wrong to stay fat. It’s wrong to get too skinny. It’s wrong to have plastic surgery. Or is it?

I have had clients who have undergone plastic surgery. One client had both a breast augmentation and tummy tuck a few years after having her son. She had anorexic tendencies and I was sorrowed to hear she was planning the tummy tuck after seeing her go through the frustrations of a boob job.

Another client, whom I currently see, is considering some mini-liposuction. She works extremely hard, trains with me weekly (and has for 3 years) and exercises on her own an additional 4-5 times/week. She takes great care of herself, takes pride in her appearance and, at 52, is considering having a plastic surgeon do what exercise, diet and genetics won’t do. If she decides to have the procedure, I will support her decision. I think she is a great candidate for plastic surgery as she is dedicated to taking care of her body and is at an age where she has the confidence and maturity to make the decision rationally and expect realistic results.

I would not have liposuction. I would not have a boob job. Someone suggested to me a few years ago (before I had my first kid) that I was a good candidate for early Botox because I had the beginnings of lines on my forehead. I didn’t know whether to hit her or laugh. Now I have some REAL beginnings of lines and I still can’t imagine having Botox. But I would never judge a woman who does. Several of my clients have Botox regularly. It’s just not for me. Or not yet, anyway…

The jury is still out on the tummy tuck. I gained A LOT of weight with my first baby. With my second baby, born 5 months ago, I gained

less.  But with a bout of postpartum depression, I gained an additional 8 pounds after my most recent child was born!  Bummer.  Now I’m teaching Belly Bootcamp classes, jogging and watching my diet to begin taking off these pesky pregnancy pounds.  I know it will come off. Postpartum weight loss (like every other kind of weight loss) is really just a combination of diligence and patience. Plus it’s my job to lose the weight! But the skin… the skin does not go away. I had loose skin after my first pregnancy weight came off, and I know it’s not going to be any better the second time around.  So maybe I won’t rule out a tummy tuck just yet.

The jury’s out on whether or not I’ll ever go under the knife, but the truth is I’d be a bit embarrassed to do it.  Not because there is anything wrong with plastic surgery, but because we’re so judgmental of our fellow mommies.  Take Kate Gosselin, for example.   Why should we care that she has had a tummy tuck? The woman has had 8 children – 6 of them in one shot! Doesn’t this woman deserve a tummy tuck? I think she deserves a congressional medal of honour. If she’s willing to settle for fame, fortune and a free tummy tuck, what do I care?

But people do care. Maybe you care. Is there something wrong with a woman having a tummy tuck? Is a tummy tuck different from other types of plastic surgery; is it more forgivable? Have you had plastic surgery? Would you?

BabbaCo Cover~PTPA Award Winning Product

Babbacover fleeceI get so excited when I come across a product that is so creative and a well needed accessory during motherhood. When reading about Babbaco, right away, flashbacks of when I could have used this product popped into mind. Winter baby? I hated going out of the house because of the cold and there is nothing worse than a cold, windy winter day, let alone with a baby. I would literally throw a blanket over the car seat while sprinting to the car to keep her warm. The Babba Cover Snuggle Fleece would have been the perfect solution to keeping Isabella warm. How about those chilly night’s in the fall or spring. Does Halloween or Easter come into mind? Outside activities of Trick or Treating and Easter egg hunts. You Northerner’s know what I’m talking about. Try a Everyday Flannel Babbacover for those conditions. Or how about those windy, sand in your face, beach days. Ugh!! Nothing worse! Protect your baby from the sand with a Airy Cotton Babbacover. I will not go without a Babba cover when the time comes for baby #2! Baby-Momma Kudos go out to Jessica Kim for a AMAZING product!  This was one of the products shown on the Rachael Ray show during the PTPA segment.  No surprise to me that this was approved by the PTPA Panel!

Fox 25 Morning News and Me!

I love my kids, in fact I adore my kids, but the opportunity to spend a few days in Boston with just my husband was to good to pass up.  Usually I travel throughout the states to appear on morning shows and I am always on my own.  One would think that the solitude would be welcome after trying to create a balance between work and bringing up a 4 and 5 yr. old, but solitude is that last thing I am looking for.  I want  conversation and company!  So on this particular business trip to the Fox morning show, I dragged my hubby.  It was a great weekend, but even better , having him there at my segment this morning helping me set up and cheering me on was fantastic.

Take a peak at some of our newest winners because they make for great holiday gift ideas for families with little ones!
