As a first time mother, I was unsure what to expect from breast feeding and pumping for my son. When it came to a point where we were forced to pump close to 12 times a day, I struggled through countless days and nights with my old pump. It was cumbersome, loud, difficult to clean and inefficient. If I’d had the Spectra 9 during that rough time it would have been a God-send making my life as a stressed out new mom that much easier. One memory that I can recall to this day, would be my struggling to pump while my son would be sleeping - keeping a distance because of the noise but keeping an eye on him at the same time. Not an issue with the Spectra 9. I was able to pump while next to my sleeping son without disturbing him in the slightest. I also loved the option of customizing the vacuum and cycle levels according to my personal pumping comfort level.
I could go on forever… the portability, the double-pump option, the ease of cleaning… but the far most important feature for me was the backflow protection. As mothers, we will do anything for our children and all any mother wants is a healthy, happy and protected baby. I researched high and low when choosing a pump to find a model that had backflow protection or a ‘closed system’ only to discover that most top selling, high priced pumps did not contain that feature. The Spectra 9 focuses on safe hygienic pumping and that alone is worth paying top dollar for. With a retail price significantly less than most pumps out there, moms who want the best pumping experience no longer have to sacrifice top of the line features. I am a nursing mother who pumps three times a day. As a result, I require a pump that is both durable and efficient. I have found the Spectra 9 meets both of these criteria. The Spectra 9 has stronger suction than other pumps I have used. The fact that it is a double pump means that I have been able to pump the same amount of milk in half the time it took with my single electric pump. I actually find that I am often able to pump more milk in half the time. My only complaint about the unit is that it can be quite noisy when in use.
The pump can either be used by plugging into the wall or rechargeable battery. I like that I have both options available, as I may need to pump in locations where an outlet is not available (such as my car). Since the unit has a rechargeable battery, I'm not wasting additional money on batteries.
Another nice aspect of this pump is that the product does not disassemble into multiple tiny pieces. This makes cleaning the product much easier than other breast pumps.
The Spectra 9 comes with all the accessories a nursing mom will require, including 6 bottles, extra tubing, a cooler, ice packs, breast milk bags and a nice black handbag for easy transport. Compared to other breast pumps, there are far more accessories included with the Spectra 9. It seems the manufacturer has really endeavored to include all items that a nursing mom will need to pump either at home or when travelling. My only criticism is that I do think the competitor's bottles are of higher quality than those included with the Spectra 9. In addition, the drawstring on the small blue bag (that holds my pump when not in use) unraveled after two days of use.
In conclusion, given the price point of this unit, I feel it is excellent value for the money spent. It is a double pump with superior suction (which results in efficient pumping) and it comes with all the accessories a nursing mom could possibly need. I would definitely recommend this product for moms that pump frequently.
