Every Natural Fact: Five Seasons of Open-Air Parenting

Suggested Retail Price:$14.95

Product Description:

Every Natural Fact: Five Seasons of Open-Air Parenting is a narrative of mother-and-son nature outings. In a style that blends the voices of Janisse Ray and Annie Dillard, a mother and son explore parallels in the world of people and nature. The interconnected chapters stand on their own and build upon each other. These explorations of natural history, flora and fauna, and parenting themes demonstrate that the mythic thread that winds thorough everything can still be found, even in a world of wounds. Amy Lou Jenkins' award-winning writing is rich in sensory immediacy, characterization, natural history, and humor. Every Natural Fact is the winner of the Ellis / Henderson Outdoor Writing Award. “Any reader drawn to the outdoors will cherish Every Natural Fact and its author's sensual intelligence potted in the fertile soil of a boundless curiosity for the world. Amy Lou Jenkins is the Anna Quindlen of the north woods, the Rachel Carson of the good land of Wisconsin, bequeathing to her son and to all of us an indestructible sense of wonder.” — Bob Shacochis, National Book Award-winning author of Easy in The Islands and The Immaculate Invasion

Read what our parent testers have to say:

I feel that the book relayed what it intended to - the way nature walks slow down the rhythm of civilized life and help parents and children to consider meaningful issues.

I really liked all the ideas in the book and can say that they were inspiring and easy to understand.

I would recommend Every Natural Fact to any parent and nature lover. The author takes you deep into the experiences of the main character and her son and demonstrates how their relationship has grown over time with the backdrop of their surroundings in every paragraph. There is no detail that is not thought of, no emotion that is unrelated. It is a heartwarming journey that makes you want to unplug from the frenzy of today's electronic society and take a break and feel the peace and harmony of nature.

This book was a wonderful eye opener for me, growing up in a rural setting and now living in the GTA where nature is something you don't see much of. I plan to use the basis behind this book to bring my children's awareness of the natural world around them to the foreground this summer and on our trip to my home province of New Brunswick in May. Hoping with the help of my father, the nature lover, to help pass this on.
